I first learned about traditional woodworking while apprenticing for a forester in southeastern England during the winter/spring of 2003. I took a chairmaking workshop from British green woodworker Mike Abbott and made my first chair that summer. Eager to learn more, I spent the following summer living and working at Drew and Louise Langsner’s homestead and traditional woodworking school, Country Workshops, in western North Carolina. With the skills and experience gained from my summer at Country Workshops, I moved to Vermont and began RivenWoodCrafts.
Other Livelihoods
I am not a full time woodworker. My interests and work reside amongst a range of land-based skills. Since 2012, my wife and I have been building our farm/homestead from the ground up. We spent two years building our super-efficient, healthy 1200 ft2 home from wood, plaster, concrete, and stone (and if we're being perfectly honest, a little bit of foam here and there). We are steadily building a diversified fruit and berry farm, keep a flock of laying ducks and chickens and have started pasturing a few ewes on our pasture. We teach workshops and host tours at our farm, sharing our insights, passions, mistakes and successes. I also own and operate an ecological planning business founded in the practices of permaculture and keyline design called Keyline Vermont LLC.
Life is full and I feel lucky to have the chance to practice and pursue my passions. May we all be so fortunate.
